Take an Energy Check With Grundfos

Overview

THE SITUATION

The Wesley Hospital is one of Queensland's largest private hospitals and has the most comprehensive range of private medical services in Australia. With more than 500 beds, the hospital has grown in response to emerging trends in the delivery of private healthcare and the growing population of South East Queensland.

The tradition of care at the Wesley Hospital dates back to 1896 when a humble building on Brisbane’s South Bank was converted into a private hospital. In 1901, the hospital was purchased by Dr Ernest Sandford Jackson, a pioneer surgeon in Queensland.

The rebuilt hospital stands today at a different location in the suburb of Auchenflower and one of its major buildings is named after Dr Jackson.

The Sandford Jackson Building was equipped with 18-year-old condenser pumps.  The building management was concerned that the aging pumps were inefficient and in need of replacement.

THE SOLUTION

In association with Re-Pump Australia, a leading sales, service and installation provider in Brisbane, Grundfos undertook an Energy Check on the Sandford Jackson Building pumps.

David Meek, facility manager of the Sandford Jackson Building, had been looking to upgrade his pumps and pump systems and mentioned this to Murray Spiller of Re-Pump Australia.  Mr Spiller, whose company provides sales, service and maintenance and project management across Queensland and NSW, was aware of the Grundfos service.

The Grundfos Energy Check calculates potential savings and make suggestions for high performing, energy efficient solutions. A report is included with every Energy Check, detailing current pump installation and operation costs and how improvements can be made to realise the savings.

The Check at the Sandford Jackson Building involved:

  • Gathering of critical pump and motor nameplate information, such as performance criteria, age and size etc. along with customer supplied information on running hours and frequency of operation.
  • A general inspection of the pumps and immediate systems.
  • A theoretical estimation on the energy savings through a one-to-one pump replacement, as well as an assessment as to which pumps can provide the larger energy saving opportunities if a different pumping solution is installed.

Mr Meek says with the building going more towards green energy, he was looking for some significant savings in the Sandford Jackson’s common power usage.

THE OUTCOME

The Grundfos Energy Check determined that the replacement of pumps in the Sandford Jackson Building with new energy-efficient ones should be considered in order to utilise the energy-saving potential.

It found the proposed replacement pumps would operate at a higher efficiency, and therefore provide energy savings, resulting in lower power costs. The reduced maintenance cost required for the new pumps would also improve the investment payback period.

The new pumps would provide a greater reliability and help to avoid any unforeseen down-time to the system. The calculation was based on the pumps operating at a fixed duty using the Best Efficiency Point from the manufacturer’s literature.

It was found that with an estimated initial outlay of $36,234 for the new equipment, there would be a payback period of 4.26 years. The savings over a period of 10 years would amount to $62,181.

Given that David Meek was also looking for a “green” outcome, the yearly  reduction in C02 emissions has been calculated at 99.23 tonnes.

The new Grundfos pumps have now been installed and Mr Meek says he is more than satisfied with the Energy Check and the changes that have been implemented.

He is now looking at getting a further check with a view to installing solar panels in the future.
