Grundfos solutions upgrade Coombabah Wastewater Treatment Plant

Overview

The Situation

With more than 530 thousand residents and approximately 11.5 million tourists annually, the Gold Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. To ensure the city has the capacity to meet future growth needs, the City of Gold Coast Council initiated an upgrade to the handling capacity and facilities of the Coombabah Waste Water Treatment plant (WWTP) completed in 2013.

The upgrade to the sewerage infrastructure at Coombabah WWTP, included the requirement for the plant to increase it effluent handling from 75 million litres per day to 90 million litres per day. To achieve this, the upgrade required additional chemical dosing capacity to support a new bioreactor, clarifier, odour control system and chlorine contact tank.

The Solution

Grundfos Pumps won the contract to design, manufacture and install the additional chemical dosing capacity. Four different Grundfos chemical storage, dosing and transfer systems, each with its own role to play in the water treatment process were installed. These included: Aluminium sulphate dosing skid, Magnesium hydroxide system, Sodium hypochlorite systems and Ethanol dosing system.

Aluminium Sulphate Dosing Skid

The Aluminium sulphate dosing skid was installed to support the WWTP’s water clarification requirements. The system consists of 14 kL duty / standby storage systems with automatic tank changeover, a duty/standby unloading system with control-room lockout to ensure the correct chemical is delivered to the system.

Magnesium Hydroxide System

The magnesium hydroxide system was added to support the WWTP’s odour control system. The Grundfos system consists of a 27 kL duty / standby storage system and a duty / standby unloading system with control-room lockout to ensure the correct delivery of chemicals.  Each tank features a low-speed mixing mechanism, to prevent settling within the tank and an automated flushing system to prevent settling in the dosing suction line.

Sodium Hypochlorite Systems

Two sodium hypochlorite systems were installed to support additional chlorination capacity. The first was designed to dose into a new chlorine contact tank and the other was designed to transfer chemicals from the main hypochlorite storage facility to the new dosing facility (approximately 300 m away). Both dosing skids were designed specifically for this project and included compartmentalised shielding, relief flow detection for operator and maintenance safety and suction and discharge degassing systems for hassle-free operation.

Ethanol Dosing System

An Ethanol dosing system was installed as a supplemental carbon source to support the new biological reactor. The system consisted of three underground fibreglass storage tanks, two used for ethanol storage and the other used as emergency storage in the event of failure of the tanker unloading system.

Both the recirculation dosing skid and dosing skid were designed specifically for the project and also included compartmentalised shielding and relief flow detection for operator and maintenance safety.

The Outcome

The project was completed in 2013 and with the installation of Grundfos chemical storage, dosing and transfer systems, the WWTP  has successfully increased its capacity to keep pace with the needs of its growing community.

The word 'Coombabah' is an English corruption of the Aboriginal word, and can have three alternate translations. The first, 'Koomboobah', means 'place of the cobra worms'. The second, 'Koombabah' means 'place of the turtles and the third, Coombabah is an Aboriginal word meaning 'home of the turtles', or a pocket of land.
