Get Ready for Summer: Tips & tricks to get your rainwater system in order

With summer fast approaching, it is time to get your rainwater harvesting system back in top order.

Below we’ve provided some tips and tricks to get your system ready for summer.

Get the ladder out

That’s right, it’s time to get up on that ladder and take a good look at your gutters and roof to check for accumulated debris, including leaf and other plant material. Keeping your roof and gutters as clean as possible will let them drain freely and avoid any contaminants entering the tank. Also, make sure you remove all debris and prune overhanging branches.

Take a look inside

If possible, check inside your tank for evidence of access by animals, birds or insects, including the presence of mosquito larvae. If present, identify and close any access points as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you check inside your tank for accumulated sediment or sludge every 2 to 3 years. Sludge is a build-up of a variety of small particles at the bottom of a tank, including vegetation debris, bird or animal deposits from your water catchment area, air-borne pollution or materials from the roof and gutter, such as flaking paint and iron. If it’s not removed, sludge can eventually build-up and block the tank water outlet or even be drawn out through the outlet, tainting the water and even damaging your pump. If sludge is covering the bottom of the tank, you should siphon it out or completely empty the tank.

Flush it out

If you haven’t utilised your tank and pump through the winter months, make sure you give it a test run to check that it’s working effectively. Turn on the pump for about 1 minute and make sure you have adequate pressure and flow. Make sure that the pump stops when the water demand is closed (when you close the tap). You should also take this opportunity to check all the pipework to ensure all connections remain secured. If you find system leaks, apply fresh Teflon plumbing tape and tighten connections.

If your pump is not working properly, or if you think it’s time to upgrade to a quieter or more energy efficient pump, the Grundfos CM Booster Range has the answer.
